Rally for a G20 Public Inquiry

Hey there - I got this through good, old Facebook, that great mobilizing tool. We need to keep up the pressure for an independent, public inquiry and, even better, the resignation of Police Chief Bill Blair - the lying dog.

***************
Join us in a peaceful protest on Canada Day.

Over the course of the the G20, police have ignored our civil liberties through illegal searches, detentions, and mass arrests -- with Chief of Police Bill Blair making up the law and misleading the public as he went along. Countless people have been profiled, harassed and many people have been beaten on the streets and in their homes, shot at with rubber bullets and gassed without provocation.

The Toronto 900 are the biggest mass arrest in Canadian history and have been denied basic legal rights of access to lawyers, phone calls, food/water, medications while being kept in cages. There are accounts of detainees being taunted, female prisoners strip-searched by male guards and threatened with sexual assault, a prisoner who is deaf denied an independent sign language interpreter, and specific targeting of Aboriginal, Francophone and Queer prisoners.

The political prisoners need to be released immediately. We need an independent inquiry over the criminalization of dissent. We need to take our city back.

Those of you not in Toronto: We will be having solidarity protests in various cities on the 17th. Please join this group and help organize and spread the word!

THIS IS IMPORTANT! GET THE WORD OUT! TELL YOUR FRIENDS! EVEN IF YOU CAN'T MAKE IT YOURSELVES!

Some people need to grow up.

Why did so many taunt the police?

Did you ever think of "lone" nutbars - Robert Kennedy, John Lennon assisinations?

Na didn't think so.

We are not so oppressed.

You want to attack Blair, but you don't know what orders he has taken, etc. from the Federal government.

How about a jail in Iran - that's oppression

What a bunch of blubbery wimps.

Lyn - perhaps you would - wimp-like as you say - roll over and accept the elimination of your basic civil rights but thousands of people luckily have the courage and conviction to take a stand against a situation where the police chief can openly lie about weapons, laws and probably, the use of provocateurs to provide the justification for a wholescale crackdown. You may be too ignorant and lazy to open your mouth but you ought to show some contrition when others have more motivation and honour than you.

JFK? Please. Don't be stupid. If the were concerned about that, don't hold the summit in downtown Toronto.

Slightly OT but in other news about tactics this is a fantastic result:

“Five activists who caused £180,000 damage to an arms factory were acquitted after they argued they were seeking to prevent Israeli war crimes.

The five were jubilant after a jury found them not guilty of conspiring to cause criminal damage to the factory on the outskirts of Brighton.

The five admitted they had broken in and sabotaged the factory, but argued they were legally justified in doing so………
In his summing up, Judge George Bathurst-Norman suggested to the jury that “you may well think that hell on earth would not be an understatement of what the Gazans suffered in that time”.”

I thought the turnout today (as well as last monday) was fantastic and glad that the proposal was accepted.

Here's hoping that the movement stays on message about a public inquiry (never use that word in a chant) instead of a "Hang Blair" movement.

I'm looking forward to hearing Judy Rebick swear more.
